Paying a bill for someone is an old Filipino habit

We pass envelopes at wakes, send money home from Riyadh, and split the Meralco bill with the cousins. Payrabao makes that habit safe for people who have never met.

Why we built it

Asking for help with a bill in the Philippines usually means a GCash number in a group chat. The people who want to help have no way to know the bill is real. The person asking has to send screenshots to prove it was paid. Strangers who would gladly chip in stay out, because a phone number is all they have to go on.

Payrabao replaces the GCash number with the bill itself. A request names the biller, the account and the due date, and we check all three. Helpers pay Payrabao, Payrabao pays the biller, and everyone gets the same receipt.

We are a small team in Metro Manila. Our tagline is the whole idea: Sama-sama, gumagaan. Together, it gets lighter.

Three rules we do not bend

  • Pay the purpose, not the person

Money goes to the biller, never to a personal account. It protects helpers from scams, and it spares the person asking from having to prove where every peso went.

  • Nobody performs hardship

Requests are short, specific and dignified: what the bill is, when it is due, and a few lines about why. Nobody needs a sad photo to get a bill paid.

  • A person checks every request

Software reads the bill. A person on our team approves it. That costs us more, and it is the reason a stranger in Cebu can trust a request from Tacloban.
